The United States has set up a forward-based command and control center in Qatar for an upcoming military exercise in the Gulf region, the US military said on Saturday.

"There are roughly 28 shelters, and it consists of all the command-and-control equipment that allows to basically establish a forward-based headquarters," US Central Command spokesman Nick Balice said.

Balice said the equipment was first tested earlier this year in Tampa, Florida, where the headquarters of the Central Command is based, and only shipped to Qatar recently.

The spokesman said the headquarters in Qatar was set up for a war game scheduled to be held in the region early next month.

But he denied that the exercise had anything to do with possible US military showdown with Iraq, saying that the US military began planning for the exercise which is dubbed Internal Look nearly one year ago.

"It just so happens to coincide with current events," Balice was quoted as saying.

The US Central Command is responsible for US military operations in the Gulf region.
