Revelers attending the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square on Tuesday night will ring in 2003 amid extremely tight security.

Under the city's security plan for the occasion, released Monday by mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, thousands of police officers on land, sea and air will be deployed to make sure it is safe.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is taking every precaution for the event though it so far has received no specificwarnings from law enforcement authorities, NYPD sources said.

The security measures will include rooftop snipers, street closings, intermittent searches, metal detectors and a ban on backpacks and alcohol.

Under a contingency plan known as "Arcangel," police officers from the bomb squad, emergency services and other special units will search the district and the transit system. Heavily armed officers will be deployed in armored sport utility vehicles.

Snipers will be posted on high-rises, police boats patrol the harbor and aviation units will scan the crowd from overhead. The Federal Aviation Administration has also banned pilots from flyinglower than 2000 feet over Manhattan and surrounding areas.

The street closure in the Times Square will begin at 4. p.m. local time Tuesday. Revelers will be subject to searches before entering the barricaded areas set aside for the countdown in the square.

"Some people will be inconvenienced, some people will be annoyed, but that's the price we pay for living in a dangerous world," mayor Bloomberg said in a press conference Monday.
