The Ecuadorian government will always stick to a one-China policy, outgoing President Gustavo Novoa Bejarano told a Chinese special envoy Tuesday in Quito.

Adherence to the one-China principle is an established policy of Ecuador, Novoa told Chinese Minister of Water Resources Wang Shucheng, who is here for attending the swearing in ceremony of the new president.

Novoa is expected to transfer power Wednesday to Lucio Gutierrez, a 45-year-old retired army colonel, who won the Nov. 25presidential elections with nearly 55 percent of the vote.

China is a long-time friend of Ecuador and, with the efforts of both governments, the development of friendly cooperative relations between the two countries has made strides in recent years, Novoa said.

He pledged he will remain committed to the development of Ecuador-China relations after he leaves office.

The Chinese envoy spoke highly of the progress of Ecuador-China relations achieved during Novoa's presidency.
