CPC Leader Visits Top Mathematician
Tianjin Party chief Zhang Lichang paid a New Year call to Shiing-Shen Chern, Chinese-American academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Saturday on the occasion of the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Tianjin Party chief Zhang Lichang paid a New Year call to Shiing-Shen Chern, Chinese-American academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Saturday on the occasion of the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Zhang, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Secretary of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee, extended season greetings to the 92-year-old mathematician and encouraged Chern to offer more suggestions for the development of Tianjin city.
In a meeting with Chinese President Jiang Zemin in 1993, Chern suggested holding an International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM)in China.
In 2002, the ICM was successfully held in Beijing, with Chern acting as the honorary chairman and donating 200,000 yuan (24,100 US dollars) to the congress.
