IOC president Jacques Rogge gave his approval to the logo for the 2008 Olympic Games on Monday, saying the design an elongated take on the five Olympic rings.

Rogge said the logo of the Beijing Olympic Games was "young, dynamic - bringing together the historical and cultural heritage, as well as the future of China."

As introduced by Jiang Xiaoyu, vice-president of Beijing Olympic Games Organizing Committee who's just returned from Lausanne, on Mar 27 the BOGOC, a group of seven flew to Lausanne, the headquarters of the IOC. They delivered to the IOC the designed insignia for the 29th Olympic Games to be held in Beijing in 2008 and made a presentation as to its design and conceptual idea. After the consideration and discussion of the high-ranking officials Rogge, President of the IOC and Verbruggen, President of the Coordination Commission for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games the insignia program presented by BOGOC won the official approval of the IOC.

That the logo for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games has won the official approval of the IOC has indicated that the project of the visual image and city landscape of the BOGOC has entered a new stage, said Jiang Xiaoyu. And the plan for market development will also be fully kicked off in the last ten days of May. As revealed by Jiang, the BOGOC and the IOC will at once begin a series of work of registration for the Insignia in China and in the world to get lawful protection and to exercise other relevant legal procedures. It is initially decided to bring it to light on the 25th of May.

There are three special characteristics for the logo of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, said Jiang. The first is that it has fully displayed the brilliant Chinese civilization in the past several thousands of years, embodying the feature of the Chinese culture. Second is a full expression of the spiritual image of the Olympic aims, to go in for "the faster, the higher and the stronger", with the stress laid on the sportsmen and a healthy upward spirit. Third is a full reflection of the present-day China in which there is not only a long and brilliant history but also an atmosphere of modern times, having made a better combination of the past and the future, culture and sports and the cultures in the orient and of the west.
