An official with the Office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on Tuesday said the Huaihe River is experiencing flooding similar to those that hit in 1991, but figures on the death toll, flood affected areas and population are largely reduced.

According to the preliminary statistics released by the headquarters, there have been five people killed so far, 3.3 million hectares of farmland affected and 50,000 rooms demolished amid the Huaihe River flooding this year.

Zhang Zhitong, vice-director of the Office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said the Huaihe River this summer received unprecedented rainfall and the water levels at certain spots along the river had risen to record height.

However, no major threats have so far been detected at embankments along the main stream of the river, but 894 minor incidents have threatened the dykes around flood diversion areas, making up three-fifths of the figure in 1991.

Moreover, about 17 flood diversion areas were used in 1991, while only seven have been used so far this year.
