Singapore Airlines announced on Wednesday that it is to launch direct flight service from Singapore to Los Angeles, the United States, in February 2004, which will be the world's longest non-stop commercial flight.

The Singapore national carrier said that the flight will take about 16 hours.

It said it is also planning to launch a direct 18-hour flight service from the city-state to New York in August next year.

For passengers, the non-stop direct flight services mean the saving of two hours to Los Angeles and up to six hours to New York.
