For the third consecutive year, the University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong (HKUST) is leading the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian ranking of universities , followed by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS), both of which are in second places. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has fallen to the seventh place from the fifth in 2012. Peking University ranked the fifth for the first time.

This is the fifth annual survey of Asian universities conducted by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), inviting 28,000 academics and 7,700 employers to assess the reputation of institutions. Factors such as the ratio of numbers of students and teachers, the number of articles published, frequency of articles cited, internationalization and the number of students participating in exchanges abroad ... were taken as reference for ranking.

Apart from Peking University, other universities in Chinese mainland also show strong competence: Tsinghua University (14th), Fudan University (23rd), the University of Science and technology of China (26th), Shanghai Jiaotong University (27th), Zhejiang University (28th), Nanjing University (29th).

According to Ben Sowter, head of QS survey, 17 percent of the 200 best universities in the world come from Asia.
