KAMPALA, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda are holding consultations on ending the latest escalation of fighting in the eastern part of the DRC.

Fred Opolot, a Ugandan government spokesman, told reporters here on Wednesday that the DRC's Joseph Kabila and Rwanda's Paul Kagame have been meeting since Tuesday night and are expected to meet Uganda's leader Yoweri Museveni.

"In view of the escalating conflict in eastern DRC, both President Kabila and President Kagame met yesterday in Kampala. There after both met President Museveni in his capacity as chair of the International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR)," said Opolot.

He said the meeting is ongoing and a final decision will be announced at a later stage.

He said the leaders will meet again on Nov. 24 to discuss how to end the conflict that has forced tens of thousands of Congolese to flee to neighboring Rwanda and Uganda.

Uganda as the chair of the ICGLR, a body bringing together 11 member countries, has since July been mediating to help end the fighting.
