SYDNEY, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Polls closed in Nauru's general parliamentary elections Saturday, paving the way to resolve a lengthy political deadlock in the country.

A total of 68 candidates were nominated to contest the 19 seats in the parliament.

Parliament was dissolved last month. Nauru's President, Sprent Dabwido, declared a state of emergency after then, and put the date of the election forward by two weeks.

The election was originally scheduled for June 22.

The election results are expected on Sunday morning. The new parliament could be sworn in as early as June 11.
