Over 10 feared killed, 50 missing in flooding in northern India

NEW DELHI, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Over 10 people are feared dead and 50 were washed away in the northern Indian state Uttarakhand on Monday due to heavy rains, said local media.

A cloud burst in Rambada of the state took place early Monday, in which 50 people went missing, said Indo-Asian News Service.

In the worst hit areas of Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi, where rivers were, more than two dozen were washed away in the strong currents.

In the neighboring state Himachal Pradesh, five members of a family, including three children, were buried early Monday when boulders fell on their house.

The incident took place in the state's Kinnaur district, where rescue work by the locals has begun but the government officials are trying to owing to massive landslides.

In another northern state Haryana, Indian Air Force helicopters have joined rescue operation to pick hundreds of people from villages marooned by water.

Early monsoon rains reached northern India last weekend, causing a relief from the heat but widespread flooding and water logging.

In the capital Delhi, traffic came to a standstill in many thoroughfares due to waterlogging.

Officials have warned people against water-related accidents as many electric wires have also fallen to the ground or into the water.
