Argentine truck drivers strike to protest tax policies

BUENOS AIRES, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The Argentine Union of Truck Drivers launched a 24-hour strike on Monday to protest government policies on income taxes.

Truck drivers gathered at the Plaza de Mayo Square in the center of the capital to demand income-tax relief by stopping services, including the delivery of fuel and daily newspapers and magazines, and trash collections.

Hugo Moyano, head of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and leader of the Truck Drivers' Union, called on workers to end "unfair" policies by voting in the October congressional elections.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies of Argentina says people have been increasingly dissatisfied with weakened purchasing power due to rampant inflation and increased taxes.

The Union of Truck Drivers is one of the biggest unions in the country with 250,000 members.
