ALGIERS, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who had been hospitalized in France since late April, returned home on Tuesday, local media reported.

His presidential plane landed at the military airport of Boufarik on Tuesday near capital Algiers.

Earlier in the day, Algerian TSA news website indicated that the presidential airplane carrying Bouteflika had taken off from Paris.

Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal cut short his visit to Tizi Ouzou province and headed to the military airport to receive the president, said Ennahar TV.

Bouteflika, 76, suffered a transient ischemic attack on April 27 and was sent to Val-de-Grace military hospital in Paris to get medical treatment. He was transferred on June 2 to the Institution des Invalides for convalescence and rehabilitation.

The president's minor stroke triggered debate in the country's political arena, as some radical opponents urged to hold early election to elect a new president.

Bouteflika appeared on TV in mid June for the first time since his hospitalization in an appear attempt to reassure his countrymen about his health despite media reports saying that he will not be able to run the country.
