ISLAMABAD, July 28 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and several others injured in a U.S. drone strike launched late Sunday night in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of North Waziristan, reported local Urdu TV channel Samaa.

According to the local media reports, the U.S. unmanned aircraft fired two missiles at a living compound suspected of being a militant hideout in the Shawal Tehsil of Miranshah in North Waziristan, a tribal area bordering Afghanistan.

Identities of the killed and injured are not known at this point.

Sunday's U.S. drone strike in North Waziristan is the 17th of its kind in Pakistan in 2013. Since this year at least 106 people have reportedly been killed in such strikes.

Despite the repeated protests by the Pakistani side, the U.S. side has never ceased its drone strike in Pakistan as it believes that it is an effective way to wipe out the militants hiding in Pakistan's northwest tribal areas, who often launch cross-border attacks on the U.S.-led NATO troops in Afghanistan.
