AU high-level panel undertakes week-long mission in Egypt

ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) High- Level Panel for Egypt undertakes a week-long mission in the North African country being gripped by turmoil.

The pan-African bloc said in a statement on Wednesday that the Aug. 28-Sept. 3 mission is in pursuance of the relevant pronouncements of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) on the situation in Egypt.

During its visit, the panel intends to meet with the highest Egyptian interim authorities, as well as other stakeholders in search for a way out of the current crisis.

The AU High-Level Panel for Egypt was appointed on July 8 by Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, chairperson of the AU Commission.

It comprises former presidents Alpha Omar Konare of Mali and Festus Mogae of Botswana, as well as former Djiboutian prime minister Dileita Mohamed Dileita.

The panel held its first meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on July 16 July and visited Egypt for the first time between July 27 and Aug. 4.
