JOS, Nigeria, Sept. 2 -- Five family members were killed in Nigeria's middle-belt state of Plateau to add to bloodshed in attacks plaguing the West African country in recent years, local police reported on Monday.

Gunmen attacked Kunte Village of Jos South local government area of the state on Sunday night, state police spokesperson Felicia Anselm told reporters.

"The father, mother and their three children were the only victims of the attack. It is purely an act of criminality, not a crisis with religious or ethnic inclination," she said.

The police have dispatched a team to search for the perpetrators of this latest criminal act, so that they would brought to justice, the security officer added.

Plateau State has witnessed many religious and ethnic crises resulting in the killing of thousands of its residents since 2001.

On June 27, at least 32 people were killed and many others sustained injuries in three villages of Langtang South local government area of the state, following incidents of cattle rustling.
