Profile: Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte

At the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will start a two-day visit to China on Friday.

The following is a brief profile of the Dutch prime minister.

Born on Feb. 14, 1967 in The Hague, Rutte went to study history at Leiden University, where he obtained an MA degree in 1992.

From 1992 to 2002, he was employed by Unilever and its subsidiaries, where he worked in the human resources department and played a leading role in several reorganizations.

Rutte served as state secretary for social affairs and employment from July 2002 to June 2004 and state secretary for education, culture and science from June 2004 to July 2006.

He quit his post as state secretary in June 2006, when he was elected the leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy.

Rutte was elected as Dutch prime minister in October 2010 and was re-elected in November 2012.

He is unmarried.
