South Indian city air traffic control authorities study data over missing Malaysian plane

NEW DELHI, March 16 -- The air traffic control authorities in the southern Indian city of Chennai facing the Bay of Bengal has joined search for missing Malaysia Airlines jet, said local media Sunday.

On a request from their counterparts in Kuala Lumpur, the city' s air control authorities have begun scouring their flight records since Saturday, said Times of India online.

The report quoted senior officials as saying they were scanning the entire aviation surveillance data under the jurisdiction of Chennai Air Traffic Control, which extends up to 100 miles west of Kuala Lumpur.

Information from the automatic surveillance-broadcast system based in Port Blair in the Andaman Islands is also being used in the search, said the report.
