Symposium on security and cooperation in Asia-Pacific region held in Beijing

BEIJING, June 20 (ChinaMil) -- A two-day-long international academic symposium on Security and Cooperation in Asia-Pacific Region was unveiled on June 19, 2013 in Beijing.

Qi Jianguo, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and chairman of the China Institute for International Strategic Studies (CIISS), delivered a keynote speech titled "Push forward pragmatic cooperation hand in hand and safeguard security in Asia-Pacific region jointly ".

Qi Jianguo said that the current security situation in the Asia-Pacific region is generally stable. But there also exist risks and challenges. As a result, strengthening cooperation in the security field is becoming the consensus among various countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Facing the common regional security threats, the countries in the region should strengthen strategic mutual trust, respect each other's concerns, expand and enrich the channels for security cooperation continuously, improve and strengthen the platform for security cooperation and create a new situation for promoting development, seeking peace and ensuring security through cooperation. Qi added that China is willing to make tireless efforts hand in hand with various countries in the Asia-Pacific region for regional peace, prosperity and development.
