160 PLA colonels and majors attend UNMO selection and assessment

NANJING, August 26 (ChinaMil) –A total of 160 senior colonels, colonels, lieutenant colonels and majors from the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) recently attended the United Nations Military Observers (UNMO) selection and assessment held in the PLA University of International Studies.

The selection and assessment of UNMO is so rigorous that candidates shall receive a primary selection, a second-time screening and a final assessment, with an over 50 percent elimination rate for each section.

On the assessment site, reporter saw the 160 colonels and majors divided into 5 groups to take turns to attend each subject assessment.

The examiners of the English test were English professors with peacekeeping experience. The key points for the assessment and selection were placed on the candidates' practical application capabilities of English listening, speaking, reading, writing and others.

On the driving assessment site, the colonels and majors took tests in turns on such subjects as backing into garage, paralleling parking, U-turn on road, and driving in special and complex road environment. A navy lieutenant commander told the reporter that the assessment completely simulates the environment for peacekeeping mission in foreign countries. It was highly job-oriented.

It is learned that as the training base for military diplomatic personnel, the PLA University of International Studies has arranged 150-odd instructors to serve in United Nations peacekeeping mission areas and held 32 UNMO training classes, with 1,300-plus high-quality peacekeeping personnel trained and delivered.
