WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 -- China and the United States have agreed to enhance people-to-people exchanges in areas of education, science, culture, sports, women and youth affairs.

The two countries on Thursday held the fourth annual Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) in Washington, which was co-chaired by Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

Liu told the meeting that remarkable progress has been made since the CPE mechanism was launched in 2010.

"I am convinced that with the platform of the CPE, mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation between the two peoples will further build up," she said.

Kerry, in his remarks, also lauded the achievements of the mechanism, saying this annual forum has served as "a powerful way to address challenges and to identify new ways for us to be able to enhance our engagement."

A memo was signed after the meeting.
