Chinese Doctors to Be Guided by New Law

A new law is to be introduced in China on May 1 this year to regulate the licensing of doctors in the country.

Over 100 scholars and doctors Saturday discussed the enforcement of the law at a seminar organized by the NPC Education, Science Culture and Health Committee.

The law was approved by the Third Meeting of the 9th Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee on June 26, 1998, and was promulgated through President Jiang Zemin's No.5 presidential decree.

China now has over 1.5 million doctors and 463,000 practitioners with secondary medical school education in over 300, 000 medical organizations throughout the country.

Delegates said that the implementation of the law will provide a legal framework within which doctors can work, guarantee their rights and develop China's medical system.

Peng Peiyun, vice-chairwoman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, said that local governments and people's congresses at all levels should closely adhere to this law.

National People's Congress Standing Committee vice-chairmen Wu Jieping and He Luli, and Health Minister Zhang Wenkang attended the seminar.
