Culture Tibet Opens Route to Grand Canyon

Nyingchi Prefecture, site of the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon, recently opened three tourist routes that take from 13 to 15 days to reach the canyon.

Yarlung Zangbo Canyon at the southeastern part of Tibet Autonomous Region is 504.6 km long and 6,009 m deep at its lowest point, making it the world's longest and deepest canyon.

"This is an ideal place for exploration, mountain and cliff climbing, drifting and scientific investigation," said Wang Jinchuan, director of the Nyingchi Prefectural Tourism Bureau.

Along with the grand canyon, Nyingchi boasts 45 scenic spots including towering snow peaks, vast grasslands, ancient temples, and many unique nature preserves.

Moreover, the prefecture has built a star-grade hotel accommodating 300 guests in addition to hotels on other counties. It will take tourists five hours for a journey from the autonomous regional capita of Lhasa to Nyingchi Prefecture when a highway is completed next year, Wang said.

A club has been established to find the whereabouts of the legendary "wild man" of Yarlung Zangbo Canyon, he added.
