World ASEAN Leaders Gathering in Manila for Informal Summit

Heads of state or government of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are arriving in Manila on November 27 for an informal summit scheduled for November 28.

According to a schedule released by the conference secretariat, those who are arriving are Sultan Haji Hassnal Bolkiah of Brunei, Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia, President Abdurranhman Wahid of Indonesia, Prime Minister Sisavath Keobounphanh of Laos, Senior General Than Shwe of Myanmar, Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong of Singapore, Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai of Thailand, and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai of Vietnam.

Malaysia will be represented by Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar as Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad is too busy with his country's elections.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, who arrived here Friday, will join ASEAN leaders for an informal meeting in the presidential palace Saturday evening. Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi and South Korean President Kim Dae-jung are also coming Saturday.

ASEAN leaders will convene the Third ASEAN Informal Summit Sunday morning and will meet their Chinese, Japanese, South Korean counterparts Sunday afternoon.

Sunday's meeting will focus on regional cooperation in economic, social, political and security fields.
