Indian troops arrest militant commander in Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 20 -- A militant commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfit was arrested Friday by Indian troops in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

"On specific information, police and Indian army today arrested LeT district commander Naveed Jat of Multan in Pakistani from a hide out in Kulgam," a police spokesman said. "Naveed was operating in Shopian area for the last two years and was involved in the killing of two policemen near in Pulwama and the recent firing on a police party at Shopian in which five police personnel were wounded."

According to police Jat was arrested from Shampora village of Yaripora in Kulgam district, about 76 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Police has also claimed recovery of an assault rifle and some ammunition from the site.

LeT outfit is accused of carrying out a terror attack on India' s financial capital -- Mumbai in 2008. The attack claimed 165 lives.

Meanwhile, a bullet riddled body of another LeT militant was recovered in Yaripora village, police said.

"Today morning locals of village Chinigam in Yaripora informed police that a male body is lying in an open field in their village. The body was later identified as Zakir Bhat a local cadre of LeT," the spokesman said.

The police is unclear about the killing of Bhat.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between militants and Indian army troopers in Indian- controlled Kashmir takes place intermittently.
