SEOUL, Oct. 17  -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) showed no change in its position during the inter- Korean military talks for past provocations, Seoul's defense ministry said on Friday.

A South Korean Defense Ministry official told a press briefing that there was no change in the DPRK's stance over a South Korean battleship's sinking and its shelling of a South Korean border island during the Oct. 15 dialogue.

General-level military officials from the two Koreas held a " closed-door" meeting Wednesday at the truce village of Panmunjom.

The South Korean delegation made it clear during the talks that the DPRK was responsible for the two incidents, but Pyongyang showed no change in its stance and expressed no apology to the provocations, the official said.

The South Korean Navy corvette Cheonan sank in waters near the disputed western sea boundary in March 2010.

Seoul has claimed it was caused by the DPRK's torpedo attack, but Pyongyang has denied its involvement.

In November 2010, the DPRK shelled the Yeonpyeong Island, one of the five border islands near the western sea border, killing two civilians and two marines.

South Korea has demanded responsible actions from the DPRK toward the two incidents, saying it could be a precondition for lifting the so-called May 24 sanctions imposed by Seoul in 2010 after the warship sinking.

Meanwhile, Seoul called for the Oct. 15 meeting not to be disclosed at an early stage as the DPRK proposed the talks on Oct. 7 when naval ships of the two Koreas exchanged fires near the disputed western sea border.

The official said South Korea demanded a "closed-door" meeting at that time as it was a sensitive period in inter-Korean relations due to the exchange of naval gunfire.
