Chinese health authorities are hoping to expand this country's HIV testing rate through the use of oral testing devices, which are much quicker to use than standard blood tests.

Xiao Dong is the head of China's HIV Quick Test Program.

"We are cooperating with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the Beijing You'An Hospital to organize community training in north China. We hope to provide the rapid HIV tests to high risk groups."

The test takes less than 20-minutes to deliver results, which are more than 90-percent accurate.

The rapid-result tests are available in Beijing in authorized clinics.

People can also buy the reagent from both online and offline pharmacies.

Wu Zunyou, director of the HIV/AIDS department with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, says the oral test has done a lot to increase HIV detection rates in China.

The average detection rate for HIV ranges between 30 and 50 percent globally.

The US has the highest HIV detection rate, with around three-quarters of those believed to be infected with HIV aware they have the virus.
