Solution to Ukrainian crisis needs peaceful efforts, not weapon supply

BEIJING, Feb. 6 -- Solution to the Ukrainian crisis -- a serious turmoil ripping apart the country -- requires peaceful efforts by the international community rather than lethal weapons supply as threatened by the United States.

The upcoming meeting among French, German and Russian leaders on Friday in Moscow is intended to be a big diplomatic push to settle the Ukrainian crisis peacefully, which could be a chance to end surging violence in the eastern European country.

Analysts have established a link between the surprising Russia visit by the two European leaders and possible U.S. lethal weapon supply to Ukraine, and the visit has been translated into a reflection of the EU's serious concern over further deterioration of the situation in Ukraine driven by the threatened military support shift.

U.S. media reported on Monday that Washington is mulling supplying Ukraine with military lethal weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles as well as other arms and ammunitions to back its crackdown on independence-seeking insurgents in the country.

It is obvious that sending lethal weapons to any party involved in the conflict by any state will not help to improve the situation in Ukraine.

Rather, it will only lead to a vicious circle in the conflict-torn territories and threaten regional stability and security.

A Russian scholar has predicted that his country would react radically to the military support if it comes true, as Russia deems that even sending limited quantity of weapons to Ukraine could open a Pandoras Gearbox, and that if it keeps silent this time, heavy weapons could be the next batch.

Both Hollande and Merkel may have recognized that Russia's possible reaction could cause spiral of the already serious situation in Ukraine, which may spill over to the rest of Europe. So they hope to make compromises among related parties before the threatened U.S. lethal weapons support becomes a reality.

Actually, an important and imperative job for now is to promptly halt all military action and resume peaceful dialogue between the government and the insurgents in Ukraine.

It is highly hoped that the international community could exert every possible political and diplomatic effort rather than threaten supply of lethal weapons to ensure a peaceful solution for the crisis.
