PYONGYANG, May 9-- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has successfully test-fired a strategic ballistic missile from an underwater submarine, official news agency reported on Saturday.

DPRK leader Kim Jong Un issued an order to begin the test-firing and watched the test, according to the Korean Central News Agency(KCNA).

The underwater ballistic missile was developed "on the personal initiative ... and under meticulous guidance" of the top leader, the KCNA said.

The report did not mention the date of the test.

It said the test fire proved the underwater ballistic missile launched from the submarine has fully met the requirements of latest military science and technology.

Kim lauded the test fire, saying the "successful test fire of ballistic missile from Korean-style attack submarine is an eye-opening success as signal as satellite launch."

He praised it as a wonderful gift presented to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea on Oct. 10.

Acquiring the technology of firing underwater ballistic missile made it possible for the army to possess a world-level strategic weapon capable of attacking in any waters and conducting underwater operations.
