In Guiyang in China’s Guizhou province, there is a well-known loving couple — Gu Keda and Liu Meixiu. People call them Grandpa Gu and Grandma Liu. Gu is 100 years old, Liu is 91 and they have been together for 70 years. “We complete each other,” said Grandma Liu, “He has great sight, but poor hearing, and I am the other way around. So he is my eyes, and I am his ears. ”

They met during the War of Resistance against Japan. For Grandpa Gu, it was love at first sight. But Grandma Liu had doubts at first since the two of them were from distant provinces. In the end, Gu’s persistence eventually moved Liu and they got married. For a ten year period starting in the 1960s things were tough for the couple. Liu had to help sewing other people’s clothes to get food for the family. Not until the 1980s did their life finally improve. For the couple, the biggest pride is that their five children all went to college and have satisfying jobs.

Now they have great grandchildren, and yet still the two of them living together. They play Chinese chess, stroll in the park, and recently they developed an interest in taking an electrically powered wheelchair to go to parks. People on Zaoshan Road often see the old couple sitting in one wheelchair, heading to the park.
