Some 500 Beijing residents have been rewarded over 600,000 yuan ($93,900) for providing tips about terror-related crimes since the reward system was launched in March 2014, the Beijing police announced Tuesday.

The capital police announced that they have recently rewarded three citizens who provided tips, calling for the public to help fight terrorism.

A resident was rewarded 3,000 yuan on Thursday for providing information on a bomb threat after noticing online posts about suspected bombs.

Police detained one suspect based on the tip and have placed the suspect in criminal detention for disorderly conduct, the Beijing-based newspaper the Mirror reported.

Another two Beijing residents were also rewarded 3,000 yuan each for providing tip-offs about terror-related activity. Police said one of them noticed a possible provocation during a major event, while the other reported a suspicious-looking person. No further details were offered, according to the Mirror.

The reward system, which was implemented on March 1, 2014, allows citizens to report to police in person, by phone or online about any activities, organizations or individuals planning or instigating terror-related crimes.

The authorities said they plan to give better rewards to important or timely tips and are working to enhance counter-terrorism publicity, the Mirror reported.
