Expensive Beijing overpass abandoned for years, used as trash heap

By Li Yan (People's Daily Online)    17:46, January 11, 2017

Despite absorbing an estimated 10 million RMB ($1.44 million) in the process of its construction, an overpass in the Shunyi district of Beijing has been abandoned since it was built in 2010. Due to poor supervision, the overpass has been occupied by piles of rubbish, which eventually lead to a dead end.

Wang Ruiying, a professor at Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, expressed concern that the overpass may be corrupted by water, as its drainage system could be compromised by the garbage.

An employee of the municipal engineering department of Shunyi noted that the overpass was built to support the Northern Airport Line to Beijing Capital International Airport. However, use of the line has yet to be planned. He added that the overpass will be reopened to traffic within two years. He further described plans to petition the local government to remove the rubbish and set up obstacles to prevent further dumping.
