Backgrounder: APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting

PORT MORESBY, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting of 2018 is scheduled from Nov. 17-18 in Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guina (PNG).

Leaders and representatives from 21 member economies are expected to have discussion focused on building common ground on trade to ensure growth, job creation and better quality of life for people in all areas of the Asia-Pacific, under the theme of "Harnessing Inclusive Opportunities, Embracing the Digital Future."

The APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting is a top-level meeting under the APEC institutional framework. As a culmination of annual APEC forum, it is on the heels of the Ministerial Meeting and the CEO Summit. Since the first informal leaders' meeting in Seattle, the United States in 1993, the summit has been convened on a yearly basis in the Asia-Pacific region.

Chinese presidents have attended all APEC Economic Leaders' Meetings, and the positive, balanced and rational proposals they made at those meetings have won wide acclaim.

Among the APEC summits, China has successfully held two -- one in Shanghai in 2001 and the other in Beijing in 2014.

During the past 25 years since 1993, the APEC Economic Leaders' Meetings were held in Seattle of the United States, Bogor of Indonesia, Osaka of Japan, Subic of the Philippines, Vancouver of Canada, Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia, Auckland of New Zealand, Seri Begawan of Brunei, Shanghai of China, Los Cabos of Mexico, Bangkok of Thailand, Santiago of Chile, Busan of the Republic of Korea, Hanoi of Vietnam, Sydney of Australia, Lima of Peru, Singapore, Yokohama of Japan, Hawaii of the United States, Vladivostok of Russia, Bali of Indonesia, Beijing of China, Manila of the Philippines, Lima of Peru again and Da Nang of Vietnam.
