Under the agreement, Huawei will connect the Palace Museum with 5G technology, build a smart zone within the museum and hold artificial intelligence (AI) contests at the museum.

The Chinese telecom giant will use innovative technologies such as 5G, cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) to advance the Palace Museum’s goal of becoming a first-class global museum.

The cooperation with Huawei has drawn the museum closer with technology, said Shan Jixiang, the museum's curator.

Shan envisions a high-tech-backed Palace Museum that presents visitors faster network speeds, high-definition video content, as well as an instant display of information about ancient buildings and cultural relics on display in the Palace Museum.

With the support of 5G technology, the museum will also be able to monitor the storage, restoration, transportation and exhibition of cultural relics, invite cultural relic doctors and archeologists from around the world to conduct remote consultations on cultural relic restoration and archeological investigations.

The AI technology is also expected to provide a more comprehensive platform for student education, Shan said.
