China commits to continued support to Jordan: ambassador

(Xinhua)    09:49, December 17, 2019

AMMAN, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to Jordan Pan Weifang on Monday said China committed to keep providing Jordan with all possible forms of assistance, given the difficult circumstances that have been facing the country over recent years.

At a press conference in Amman, the ambassador said economic and commercial relations between the two countries have achieved new progress since establishing strategic bilateral relations and Jordan's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Pan said that total bilateral trade has amounted to 3.103 billion U.S. dollars in the first three quarters of 2019, marking a year-on-year increase of 27.7 percent.

Total Chinese imports from Jordan have amounted to 356 million U.S. dollars, marking an annual increase of 129.61 percent, added the ambassador.

He added that the under-construction Attarat Oil Shale Power Plant Project, in which China has invested 1.6 billion U.S. dollars will meet 10-15 percent of Jordan's electrical needs, which will help reduce Jordan's reliance on imported energy sources.

The project will also be conducive to save Jordan's energy costs and guarantee its energy security while providing more than 5,000 job opportunities, the diplomat said.

In 2019, within the framework of the Chinese Foreign Aid Programme, 468 Jordanian officials, enterprise managers, and technicians visited China to participate in various bilateral training courses organized by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
