The International Chan Wu Federation introduces level assessment for Shaolin Kung Fu. A learner typically needs three years to be an assistant and five to six years to be a coach. After qualifying as a coach, most can earn 800 or even 1,200 euros a month. According to Shi Xing Hong, "the prospect of combing learning and profits motivate them to promote Chan Wu. The funds of the International Chan Wu Federation are based on two sources. The first is the donations from entrepreneurs and other insightful people. The second is the one percent tax paid by all Chan Wu learners. The Hungarian law stipulates that all citizens are free to donate one percent of their taxes to a non-profit organizations."
The International Chan Wu Federation will be ten years old next year. In these years, the Chan Wu Federation has been making solid progress, exemplified by the training of 130 coaches, building of 68 schools, and the annual enrollment of at least 2,000 students.
Feeling healthy, happy, and harmonious
"By establishing the Chan Wu Federation, I wish everyone could obtain physical and mental pleasure from it, and feel healthy, happy, and harmonious as we expect. I am a beneficiary of Chan Wu. Without it, I may have made many big mistakes due to combativeness," Shi said.
It has not all been smooth sailing for the development of the Chan Wu Federation. "Initially, foreigners were my targets for promoting Chan Wu, and few Chinese people participated. Over time, an unexpected problem arose. Most of our coaches are Hungarians. I used to send Hungarian coaches to Belgium and Italy, but locals did not want Hungarians to be their coaches. They thought that Chan Wu is a Chinese culture, and should not be taught by Hungarians," Shi thus began looking for a solution.
"We launched a training class specifically for Chinese in Hungary this September," Shi said. In addition, the Chan Wu Federation and Guangdong Provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs Office jointly established the Chinese Culture Transmission Base–Chan Wu Center in 2009, which mainly targets the children of overseas Chinese. "We have a five-year plan. Students are expected to work as a Chan Wu coach in other countries after graduation from the center. We have assigned four of our first batch of students to serve as a coaching intern in Italy."
Shi considers himself a promoter of Chan Wu culture, saying, "Chan enhances one's mental strength, and Wu enhances one's physical strength. Chan Wu combines two classic traditional Chinese cultures. The purpose of the Chan Wu Federation is to provide a platform for more people to learn about and benefit from various traditional Chinese cultures." Chan Wu has taken root overseas, and enjoys a promising future thanks to the hard efforts of Shi and many other devoted practitioners.
