New opportunity in development of relationship between Chinese and U.S. militaries

Some reporters asked if the mutual trust between the militaries of China and the U.S. has reached a new height, seeing the recent anti-piracy joint drill held by the Chinese and U.S. navies in the Gulf of Aden, Chinese navy taskforce's scheduled participation in the joint search and rescue drill with the U.S. counterpart at Pearl Harbor, as well as China’s participation in the Pacific Rim military exercise in 2014?

Yang Yujun stated the relationship between the Chinese and U.S. militaries has generally shown positive and active development momentum since this year. Both sides have achieved new progress in such fields as high-level exchanges, exchange of warship visits, joint exercises and drills, academy/college exchanges, and the pragmatic exchange and cooperation in military archives and others. In general, new opportunities have emerged for the development of relations between the two militaries. Meanwhile, there are still some long-standing difficulties and barriers which need to be addressed. The Chinese side is willing to work together with the U.S. side to enhance dialogues, communication and cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, mutual benefit and win-win situation, pushing forward the healthy and steady development of the relationship between the two militaries.

With regards to the U.S.’s arms sales to Taiwan, Yang Yujun said that the Taiwan issue is concerned with the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China. It involves the core interests of China. We oppose resolutely U.S.’s sale of arms to Taiwan, which is our consistent position. When reporter mentioned the situation of military exchanges across the Strait, Yang Yujun replied that strengthening the exchange in various fields across the Strait is an irresistible trend. It conforms to the shared wishes of the people across the Strait.
