Risks of delaying parenthood

Wang Zhihui, deputy director at the Beijing Antai Maternity Hospital, said she has seen many women from DINK relationships become mothers to fill a void missing in life despite their successful careers.

"Some childless women in their 40s and 50s have told me that they would give up everything they have achieved for a kid," Wang Zhihui said. "It can be difficult and hazardous for older women to become mothers. The best age for giving birth is before 30, and the function of fallopian tubes sharply decreases once women turn 35."

Wang said women need to "think more thoroughly" about committing to a DINK lifestyle than men, who suffer fewer age-related fertility problems than women. "If a husband wants a kid and is still able to but his wife can't have one, such conflict can put strain on a marriage," Wang Zhihui said.

Wang Qi added that women who ignore problems with their reproductive organs because they initially don't plan to have children often come to regret it later if they change their mind and hope to become pregnant.

"Some people think [delaying pregnancy] is no big deal because they see or hear about other women having babies in their 40s, but this is the exception and not the rule," she said.
