ACCRA, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The fire that engulfed the Makola No.2 Market in central Accra, capital of Ghana, Tuesday night has been brought under control, Ghana National Fire Service told Xinhua.

"It took us over two hours and 13 fire engines to control the fire," Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service Prince Billy Anaglate said.

According to him, the Fire Service received a call around 8:22 pm GMT, and managed to bring the fire under control before it spread to other buildings close to the market.

Prince Billy Anaglate told Xinhua that losses from the fire would likely be announced Wednesday.

Makola No. 2 Market is part of the main wholesale and retail marketplace in Accra.

This was the third reported fire in Accra in two months. On May 5 a massive fire destroyed sections of the Kantamanto Market in Accra, with lots of goods and merchandise consumed in the fire.

On May 24 Makola No. 1 Market was gutted by a fire which brought huge loss for traders. Ghana's Deputy Minister of the Interior James Agalga visited the fire site of Makola No. 1 Market recently, assuring that measures would be put in place to ensure a safer, better secured and planned market at the site to boost economic activities and secure the livelihood which was destroyed as a result of the fire.
