Japan's biannual fashion extravaganza kicked off in Tokyo Monday with thousands of fashionistas comprised of designers, buyers, journalists and fashion aficionados expected to descend on the week-long event.

The fashion week is hosted by the Japan Fashion Week Organization (JFWO) and held twice a year, with the October installment showcasing the best Japan has to offer for next year's Spring/Summer season, in the form of runway shows, static installations and exhibitions.

According to a statement from the JFWO, along with all the world's fashion weeks, Tokyo contributes heavily to influence the choices and direction of global fashion movements.

"Out of the world's fashion weeks, those held in Paris, Milan, London, New York and Tokyo are regarded as having the most potential for disseminating information due to their history and the amount of buzz surrounding them."

"These five fashion weeks are the most known fashion weeks in the world and have much influence of the fashion world," the JFWO said in a recent statement on the matter.

Show-stopping brands and designers this year are likely to include G.V.G.V, Tae Ashida, montonari ono, DRESSCAMP, Somartra, Nozomi Ishiguro and THEATRE PRODUCTS, but a myriad of other established and up-and-coming brands and designers will also be presenting their designs to the throngs of fashionistas, who will be camped out for the week at the Hikarie complex in Tokyo's trendy Shibuya District and at Tokyo's Roppongi entertainment town.

The JFWO came to light in 2005 and sees a collaboration between textile and fabric manufacturers, as well as designers and distributers.

Central to the JFWO's philosophy of providing a gateway for success in the world for new designers; a starting point for cooperation between designers, manufacturers and apparel retailers; and making Tokyo more fashionable and enjoyable, is the idea of providing both upstream and downstream business aspects.

"This for the purpose of further strengthening and developing the international competitiveness of Japan's textile and fashion industries," the JFWO said.
