A lawsuit brought against Chongqing's re-education through labor committee for sentencing a young village official to a two-year detention after he "attacked" the Chongqing municipal government's red song campaign was overruled on Monday.
The Chongqing No. 3 Intermediate People's Court announced at 3:45 pm Tuesday afternoon that the case of Ren Jianyu, the 25-year-old village official who served 15 months in detention, will be dropped since he brought the lawsuit on August 5 this year, well past the December 24 deadline.
Ren's attorney, Pu Zhiqiang, told the Global Times that he was disappointed at the verdict and would appeal to a higher court within 10 days.
"We believe it is highly inappropriate that the court disregarded the fact Ren had been detained and therefore lost his personal freedom in deciding whether to sue the re-education committee," Pu told the Global Times.
Ren was released Monday after the Chongqing re-education through labor committee officially reversed its detention. Officials from the committee earlier tried to cut a deal with him, urging him to drop the case in exchange for his freedom. Ren refused the deal.
