No school casualties in quake-hit region

BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- No casualties have been reported in schools so far after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit northwest China's Gansu Province Monday morning, said the Beijing-based China Education Daily Tuesday.

The earthquake jolted the juncture area of Minxian and Zhangxian counties in the city of Dingxi at 7:45 a.m. on Monday.

A total of 78 primary and middle schools in Minxian County and all schools in neighboring Zhangxian County reported damage of varying degrees, the newspaper report quoted local education departments as saying.

However, no teachers or students were killed or injured in school buildings because of the summer vacation, said the report.

The provincial education department has sent officials to supervise the relief work of local schools and pledged to help students and teachers who suffered in the quake, the report said.

As of 6 p.m. on Monday, 89 people had been confirmed dead in the quake with five missing.
