Sports China Claims Two Titles at World Cup Short Course Swimming Meet

The Sydney leg of World Cup short course swimming meet was concluded on January 18. Two new world records were set on this day. China claimed two titles on the last day.

Chinese Zhu Yi claimed title in the men's 100m breaststroke in 59.75 while his women compatriots Han Xue and Zhan Shu completed a one-two finish in the 100m medley.

Australia's Ian Thorpe and Susie O'Neill broke their own world records on Tuesday.

Thorpe clocked in one minute 42.54 seconds in the men's 200 meters freestyle, improving his previous record 1:43.28 set in the short-course world championships in Hong Kong last April.

The record was his fifth in the same pool in the past five months. He set four long-course world records at last year's Pan Pacific championships.

World and Olympic champion O'Neill later beat the women's 200m butterfly world mark in 2:04.16. Her previous 2:04.43 was set in Canberra four months ago.

American Jenny Thompson collected two golds in the 100m freestyle in 53.05 and 50m butterfly in 26.08.

Lenny Krayzelburg of the United States took the victory in the 200m backstroke but lost to his Australian rival Matt Welsh, who set a 50m world record four days ago, again in the 50m duel.
