Earthquake in Northern California damages wineries in Napa

San Francisco, August 24, (People's Daily Online)--A magnitude 6.0 earthquake jolted Northern California, which brings great damages to local wineries in the Napa area.

The epic center of the earthquake is near American Canyon, Napa County, 35 miles away from San Francisco.

Some of Napa’s renowned wineries reported losses of precious stock as wine bottles smashed and broke open. Tony Truchard, the owner of the Truchard Vineyards in Napa Valley told reporter that he has never encountered the earthquake like this during the past years. "I have been through many earthquakes, but nothing is like this," he said. " Both of the wine libraries are disastrous. Cases are all falling over, and broken bottles are on the floor."

It also reported that bottles of acclaimed single-vine wines flew off shelves to the floor at the famed Silver Oak Napa Winery in Oakville. The annual output of the wine industry is estimated more than 13 billion years in the Napa County. Peter, the owner of the liquor shop estimated that the loss of the shop was at least $100,000. Now all the winemakers in the Napa Valley were assessing the damage to the area’s signature industry.

The U.S. Geological Survey’s automated economic loss software predicts losses above $100 million.

U.S. Geological Survey stated online that a significant aftershock of at least magnitude 5.0 is likely in the next seven days. Police said as so far there were no reports of looting but they would maintain a high presence for the next several days in the area.
