UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations held a New Year concert here on Monday night presented by Viva Vox choir from Serbia, hoping to send a message of harmony and hope to the world.

The choir, blending both classical concepts and modernist styles by introducing beatboxing, which is characterized by authentic a cappella (voices only), put on ten performances on the stage of the UN General Assembly.

Its songs included Serbian traditional music and iconic works by some best-known bands, such as "Imagine" of John Lennon, "Mamma Mia" of ABBA, providing the audience with an auditory feast.

The concert was hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who hoped the show could "inspire us to raise our voices for justice, solidarity and peace in our world."

Vuk Jeremic, president of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly, said at the beginning of the concert that great music can cross every boundary and touch every soul.

"It is an art form that transcends all differences," said Jeremic, a former Serbian foreign minister.
