Philippine gov't seeks to cut poverty in 3 years

MANILA, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government said on Tuesday that it will slash poverty incidence in the country during the remaining three years of the Aquino administration.

Deputy presidential spokesman Abigail Valte said the government has identified priority areas where it can allocate resources to generate more jobs and provide assistance to those who need it most.

"We have three more years to keep pushing on that front. Everybody wants to see those (poverty) numbers go down," said Valte in an news briefing.

Malacanang, the presidential palace, issued the statement following the release of a report by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) which indicated that poverty incidence has not gone down significantly in the past six years.
