Suspicious powder found in parcel sent to S. Korean defense minister

SEOUL, April 23 (Xinhua)-- A suspicious powder was found in an envelope sent to South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin on Tuesday, local media reported.

The investigators later determined that the powder was wheat flour, the Yonhap News Agency reported. A photo released by South Korea's Defense Ministry shows that envelope contained white powder and a threatening note. The sender threatened in the note to punish Kim if he insults the supreme dignity of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and provoke war.

It is reported that soldiers found the anonymous envelope addressed to Kim during X-ray mail scanning shortly after 10 a.m. local time.

"The military will cooperate with police and the National Intelligence Service to carry out the investigation on this case," Yonhap News Agency quoted the ministry spokesman as saying.

Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin retained his job in President Park Geun-hye's cabinet in March amid mounting tension on the Korean Peninsula. thus becoming the first defense minister to remain in office in the country's history.
