Two workers killed in landslide in Kagoshima, SW Japan

OSAKA, April 23 (Xinhua)-- Two workers were killed after a landslide occurred Tuesday afternoon at a road construction site on Amami Oshima Island in the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Kagoshima, local officials said.

The accident happened at 12:15 p.m. local time when workers were carrying out widening works on a local road near Uken Village on the island, according to a spokesperson for the island's association for firefighting.

Hours after the accident, rescuers retrieved the bodies of the two workers in their 60s and 70s from the disaster site, the spokesperson added.

Local authorities have carried out an investigation into the exact cause of the landslide.
