China holds UN military observers international training course for first time

BEIJING, October 15 (ChinaMil) -- Beginning from October 14, 2013, dozens of military officers from 15 countries in the world would attend a three-week-long United Nations (UN) military observers training course, the first of its kind held in China, in the Peacekeeping Center of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in Beijing.

The training course set up 31 courses and 15 training subjects including basic theories and common knowledge such as UN peacekeeping operations' policies and principles as well as professional skill trainings such as patrolling and observation, negotiation and liaison, kidnapping and hijacking response, field first aid and identification of mines and explosives.

During the training course, a four-day-long actual-combat comprehensive drill will be conducted to simulate military observers' work.

At the course-opening ceremony, Hervé Ladsous, UN under-secretary-general for Peacekeeping Operations, highly appreciated the professional skills, spirit of dedication, strict discipline and professional accomplishment of Chinese peacekeeping officers and men and expressed his thanks for China's long-term support to the UN peacekeeping affairs.

Hervé Ladsous also expected the first Chinese peacekeeping force to be dispatched to Mali to have the same excellent performance in its mission areas in Mali as what the Chinese peacekeeping forces always do in other countries.

Instructors for the training course are senior peacekeeping military officers from China, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh and Germany, according to a responsible person from the Peacekeeping Affairs Office of the MND.

The UN has deployed a total of 1,800-odd military observers in 15 mission areas in the world to date. These military observers are mainly responsible for tasks including information collection, patrolling and liaison, mediation and negotiation as well as ceasefire monitoring.

The Chinese military has dispatched a total of more than 1,500 military observers since 1990. A total of 78 military observers from China are now performing their duties on the peacekeeping front line.
