Two dead in building collapse

At least two people died after a four-story building partially collapsed in Pujiang town in Minhang district Monday, local media reported.

Rescuers pulled the first body, a man, from the rubble around 6:30 pm. They reached the second victim, a woman, around 9 pm, Shanghai Television Station reported. One other person remained trapped late Monday.

Eight people managed to escape the collapse.

The building, a former clothing factory, was being renovated when half of it caved in sometime between 2:30 pm and 3 pm, according to local media reports.

About 100 firefighters, along with medical personnel and police, were on scene to aid in the rescue, the local news portal Xinmin.cn reported.

Rescue workers continue to working into the night.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
